Why: Like, when cut? I buy fresh flowers maybe once every 2 weeks. They look good for 10 days or so, but when they start to wilt, it's just the pits. The ones that leak petals are the worst.

Answer: Here is a handy list:

Short-lived: Irises

Slightly longer: Gerbera daisies and tropical flowers like heliconia

A solid investment: Peonies, roses, lilies and flowering branches

Even better: Mums, carnations and gladiolas

The winner: Orchids

That's funny, because orchids are notoriously finicky / dead. I have some mums in a bottle in the breakfast room.



My mom used to put gladiolas on our kitchen table. I don't know if I can do it, but I would like the height.

The More You Know: Some tricks for improving longevity:

• "The shorter you cut the flower, the longer they'll last, because the water has less stem to travel up to reach the flower."
• Mmake sure the container is spotlessly clean when you begin, as any leftover residue may tend to "sour" the water.
• If you drop half an asprin in their water when they start wilting, they will perk up and last for another few more days.
• Asprin, a little sugar or Sprite in the water does improve longevity.
• Add just a drop of Clorox to your water it will prevent bacteria from growing in the water and your flowers will last longer.
• Cut flower ends at an edge, and when flowers look droopy, recut and change water.
• Cut flowers under water so not to seal the ends when cutting. Tulips perk up when vodka is added to the water.
• Remove any leaves from flower stem. It helps the flower live longer.
• Use lukewarm water, not cold, and change the water often.
• Dont put them in the sun. They last much longer in a cooler spot and no leaves in the water.
